Ice Machines for South Australia’s Food Industry
Common Ice Types
The type of ice produced is a primary differentiator. Flake ice is soft, mouldable, and popular for medical and scientific labs, as well as for displaying fresh seafood. Cube ice is hard, dense, and melts slowly, making it ideal for beverages in bars and restaurants. Gourmet ice, a type of cube ice, is often clear and cylindrical or spherical. Nugget ice, also known as chewable or Sonic ice, is made from flaked ice compressed into a pellet and is popular in fast-food and healthcare.
Machine Designs and Solutions
Ice machines are generally categorised by their design and function. Self-contained machines are all-in-one units with the ice maker and storage bin combined. They’re compact and suit small-scale operations like cafes. Modular machines are separate units for the ice maker and the storage bin, offering flexibility to meet varying demands. They are scalable and often used in larger commercial kitchens. Dispensers are common in healthcare and hospitality, dispensing ice and often water with a simple push of a button for hygiene and convenience.
Cooling and Refrigeration Systems
The method of cooling is a key technical distinction. Air-cooled machines use fans to pull in air and cool the condenser coils. They are the most common and are easy to install, but they can be less efficient in hot environments and require good ventilation. Water-cooled machines use water to cool the condenser, making them more efficient in high ambient temperatures. They are quieter but consume a lot of water and are better suited for large-scale industrial operations where water is readily available. Remote-cooled machines have the condenser located outdoors, reducing noise and heat inside the premises. This is a good solution for spaces where noise and heat are a concern.
